Korsakoff’sSyndrome also known as Wernicke-Korsakoff
syndrome it is due to prolonged thiamine deficiency in the brain. This
mostly occurs in people who are chronic alcohol abusers. Because they do not
take the adequate amount of vitamins and don’t have a healthy diet. Because the
brain needs vitamin B1 and doesn’t receive it this causes the loss or shrinkage
of the neurons throughout the brain. A
distinctive symptom of this disease is Confabulation is when patients with
Korskoff’s fill in the gaps of their memories with guesses. This tendency may reflect the patient’s
attempt to maintain pleasant emotions. People with korsakoff’s learn word
sentences better than a person who doesn’t have it because they remember their
confabulation instead of the correct answer.
Hey Robert neat blog and i really enjoyed reading on this topic. I find it kind of interesting how people still have the notion to continue abuse of alcohol and they still can not find the heart to stop. Why can't people understand the hardships that can come from a severe amount of alcohol. Something that I am totally against whether it be with Korsakoff or any sort of memory loss disease is when doctors and family have to adjust by making the person relive everyday the same. By this I mean, like the movie 50 first dates, with Adam sandler and Drew Barrymore. She lost her memory due to a fatal accident and she has to relive the day before over and over again. That is just horrible.
ReplyDeleteSo the video was about a case and students acted it out?
ReplyDeleteAlcoholism is one of the worst drugs and still its legal, I know that I myself have a glass of wine once in awhile but the absolute ignorance of what alcohol blows my mind.
I liked that you explained that once Korsakoff's Syndrome was in place and that with confabulation Korsakoff filled the gaps of memories.
The adjustment that the video was portraying showed the stress that anyone family could go through. I agree with Ashley and not know what I would have to do if I had to become a family members assistant 24/7.
